View Full Version : Concerning postcount [IMPORTANT]

Some time ago a strange thought overcame me.
Why is postcount called postcount, if it doesn't count every post?
Why are there forums where it's turned off?
Take a look at the word: postcount - An indicator for how many posts someone has made, it doesn't matter whether they are good or bad.
The reason for me posting this is, that this really made me think.
We have forums where postcount is turned off and finally I think that's pretty pointless.
Postcount should count every post, so postcount should be turned on EVERYWHERE.
That's actually what I was planning to do, but since I can't do what I want here (unless I want to drive away all my members), I wanna hear your opinions first.
Note that this means, that postcount would also be turned on in the Games sections, even if the posts there might not be full of thoughts like the posts at some other places.
Concerning the ranking system:
If we really do the thing above, I'll probably get rid of the the normal ranking system, depending on posts.
I already have got a new one in mind, one which depends on the qualtity of a user's posts or how much the user has helped the forums.
The ranks would be updated manually then.
(I've also got some idea about the rules but I gonna keep this to another thread)

Yeah, go ahead :D I'll be rich in no time!
But on a serious note, yes post count does mean what the definition says, but in certain places that are very active (like games) it need to be controlled at a certain level. Otherwise, you'd get rich off of playing 'The One Above' and 'Last Word' in less than five minutes. BUT we can easily handle that, its not that big f a deal. Words often tend to stray away from their meaning, and don't necessarily always keep the same meaning overtime, but last time I checked, postcount, means what its always meant. I actuall don't oppose the idea, think that we should go for it...or at least try it out :3

We don't need to handle the posts. You can't become "rich" with postcount, when it's just a number.
That's why I'm going to change the ranking system. Users should get better ranks for either helping the forums or making senseful posts.
And for judging whether the posts in a forum are good or not, the points system might be changed.

Oh really. So then you do earn points by posting in games and other places where post doesn't count?
And I wasn't only talking about PIForums when I said 'It needed to be controlled' I was just saying why it was blocked in some places, despite what postcount technically means  Since you seemed to be in deep thought.
And yes I can become rich, I dunno about the rest of you, but frankly it is true, and I can't be stopped. XD

I don't get what you are trying to say by that.
This thread is about postcount and not the points.
The points system is going to be overworkd, as I already said.
Any opinions on my new ranks idea?

When postcount would be turned on everywhere, the noraml ranks system would be removed.
Instead there would be some other ranks like "helpful member", "competent member" and so on. Users would be rewarded with them, if staff thinks that they deserve it.
There will be many different types of these ranks and you'll also get some cool stuff with them.

Forget it being overworked. I was asking a question. Do I still earn points (the things that you use to buy stuff in the store) when I post in places like 'Games' where post count doesn't count? It does have to do with postcount, and if you answer the question then I can explain.
As for the new ranks idea, what type of rank would a user get if they mostly posted bad posts or unhelpful posts (not ban-worthy)?

I vote for bad titles such as "Village idiot" "brainless fart" and "The opposite of people on Jepordy"
I think its a great idea, do it Pika!

I personally think that having places where post count is turned off is a good idea. I think postcount shouldn't include games, or posts that take five seconds to post. But that's just me. ^^;

Nah its not you, most people feel that way, that's why most forums have it turned off

Genius! I second the motion, but P2 probably won't go for it.
"mentally defective" is also good :D

will this be a Team thing where there will be a forum saying i think [enter username here] should get a better title
or...
is there gonna be a thread in the mod forum saying i gave [enter username here] title: ________?
if its option one i think its pointless because you have to wait 3 days to get everyones opinion itll take to long and eventually die out or very little people will get a better title..
if option 2 is chosen i say go for it and if theres a disagreement you can always PM a person to ask why they upped the members title and it can always be changed back if it wasnt a fair switch
theres my 2 cents everyone...

Postcount != Points
They are both independent from each other.
I'm going to reduce the amount of points you get in the Games forum btw.
As for the new ranks idea, what type of rank would a user get if they mostly posted bad posts or unhelpful posts (not ban-worthy)?
He would stay a "Newbie" become a "N00b" or get banned.

I'm actually thinking about making a User Group for people, who are good at judging user's and give that job to them.

There! That's all I asked, and you mean Postcount =/= Points.
Then I don't have a problem with it, I thought that you had the points system turned off in some places. Nevermind ^^
But I still get rich, anyways.

I said, not ban-worthy. That's no fun :p We need to give them a title that they would be happy to get rid of, and would make them 'not want to do what they are doing which is wrong, but not ban-worthy'. Somebody who is known for getting into fights with other members, making trouble, or gets a lot of warnings, but stays on the boundaries of going to be banned, but hasn't crossed the line.

I like the idea of the new ranking system... It'd be unique, and unique is good, isn't it? If you were to put that in effect, I wouldn't care if you turned on postcount everywhere or not ^^;
And if you don't go though that, I think that you should at least turn on the postcount in Users Lounge, Support and Feedback and Translations. Those posts seem pretty good, I think. Just not games and clubs.

I'm all for turning it on in the New Users Lounge :p I think that the ranking system will do us some good :)

Well, I'm conservative.... What's the point in having huge numbers by every member that just say how many times that member has played a game (to a degree)? I'd just clearly state that post-count is off in the respective forums, or get rid of it altogether.....
Of course, the new ranking system sounds like a great idea, if it works out... I personally wouldn't want to rank users because I'm afraid I wouldn't be objective enough.....

Well, I actually still like the idea, but I think I should give this thread an end.
It's to old to start discussing this again.
I'll remake this, if there is still interest.
