The story begins with a couple of kids in Pallet Town trying to catch a wild Nidorino. They each takes turns, but end up failing each time. "Ha ha ha! You can't catch a Pokemon like that!" Red teases from afar. He explains to them that if they wnt to catch a Pokemon, they'll have to weaken it, then throw the pokeball. He sends out his Poliwhirl and uses watgergun to weaken the Nidorino. The kids look on in shock as the Nidorino looks dazed. Red then throws the Pokeball and captures Nidorino in Succession. The kids all cheer for and marvel at Red's Pokemon skills. As they all head home, Red begans to narate: "Everybody knows me in Pallet Town. And why not? I'm the best Pokemon Trainer Around! Huh? What are pokemon you ask? Strange creatures that live in the forests and lakes. I don't know how many kinds of Pokemon there are in the world...But I know that I'm gonna catch 'em all!"
Red is interupted from his thinking, when one of the boys asks him if he knows Professor Oak. Of course, Red just refers to him as the old weirdo that lives at the edge of town. The kids go on talking about how much Professor Oak knows about Pokemon and about his grandson Blue. But Red just snorts and tell them all that he himself will teach them all they need to know. As the sun sets they all take their seperate paths, and Red is off alone walking in deep thought. He isn't paying attention and stumbles into a Team Rocket Grunt. The Grunts dismiss him, and began to walk off. But Red notices that they each have Pokeballs, so they must be Pokemon trainers, and he goes after them. He hides behine a tree while they are talking, and overhears them talking about a Phantom Pokemon(Mew) and that they must find it. The Grunts all dash off into different directions to search for th Phantom Pokemon. Red comes from his hiding place, and says snidely, "Thanks for the tip guys!" He dashes off saying, "That Phantom Pokemon'll be mine...or my name's not Red!"
We then come back to the forest. Its night. Red is sneeking around with a bundle of pokeballs(probably 13 or 15) looking for the Phantom Pokemon. Something in a clearing catches his attention, and he goes to look only to find a trainer, about his age, and a strange glowing creature. The boy sends out a Chamander, and red exclaims that he must be a trainer. The Charmander unleashes a powerful flamethrower at the creature and the two start a feirce battle. Res watches on in amasement, since he has never seen a Pokemon battle like this before. He silently begins to root for Charmander. But to his surprise the boy recalls Charmander back to his Pokeball. Red, still baffled, then reveals himself from the bushes. With a surprised look on his face he yells, "What d'you think you're doing?! You almost had the thing, you, you--!!" The other boy just stare at him silently. Red then throws out his Poliwhirl to take on the strange creature, but he is easily overcome by the pokemon's power. After a powerful blast of either psychic or confusion, Red's poliwhirl falls to the ground motionless. Red looks on in horror as the Pokemon zooms away. As Red tries to revive a fainter Poliwhirl, the other boy comes up behind him and asks him, "Didn't you notice anything while you were watching us fight?" Red doesn't reply and stills tries, unsuccessfully, to revive Poliwirl. "I could almost tell immediately that there was a vast difference in strength." The boy continues to speak. "That's why I stopped the fight. Know you limitations or you'll only beat yourself." He walks off sneering, "Remember that." Red finally come too, and mumbles, "Y'mean I...I actually...lost...?
Team Rocket soon appear, noly to find the forest burnt to a crisp, from the battle. They see Red and demand that he tell them what happened. But Red doesn't reply or say anything at all. They figure that th Mew still may be near by and dash off looking fo it.
We then come to Professor Oak's lab, where Red is standing there idly, thinking about what to do. He puts his pride aside and decides that in order to become a great trainer, he must first come here. He trembles as he rings the door bell to the lab. Nothing happens. He rings it again and again, but no one answers. He then finds that the door is open, and venture off inside. He's amazed at all of the books about pokemon and all of the pokeballs he sees. One pokeball captures his attention. He goes to pick it up and sees that there is a label on it. "Bulbasaur" He reads. While Red is marveling at the cool pokemon, Professor Oak, finally, returns. He acuses Red of being a Pokethief, and goes after him. Red stumbles into a bunch of pokeballs and acidentally releases all of the Pokemon contained within. The pokemon go out and escape in different directions. Red and Professor Oak agree to work together in order to get them all back.
They capture all of the pokemon, except for Bulbasaur, who spots them and runs off into a closed Viridian Gym. Red and Oak runs in after it into the empty gym, full of cobwebs. They search until Professor Oak spots Bulbasaur. He tries to get it to come to him, but Bulbasaur launches a powerful tackle attack and knocks him off his feet. Red then tries a different approch, and nicely explains to the Bulbasaur that he knows how he feels, and shows the Bulbasaur compassion. Oak just sits there speechless, while Bulbasaur reacts sincerely to Red's kindness. Their moment is soon spoiled when a wild Machoke comes up from behined them and beins to attack. Bulbasaur protects Red, using vinewhip to hold the Machoke back. Red gets excited about the battle and seeks Professor Oaks wisdom on Bulbasaur's attacks. But Professor Oak just lays there in a daze. The wild Machoke soon breaks free of Bulbasaur's vinewhip. Red and Bulbasaur both dodge an attack from the machoke, and back into a corner out of ideas. Red notices sunlight coming from a crack in the window behind. He acts quickly and pushes the window open, letting the strong rays of sunlight flow throughout the room. Bulbasaur begans to absorb the sunlight and unleashes a powerful solarbeam. The Machoke falls to the ground, defeated. Professor Oak is amazed and asks Red how did he know about Bulbasaurs solarbeam, and Red just says that it was a lucky shot, and that he just figured that since plants need energy from the sun, it'd work on bulbasuar. Professor Oak just laughs.
Back at Oak's lab, Red is given Bulbasaur and a pokedex. Red explains to Professor Oak why he really came to his lab. Professor Oak explains to him what it truly takes to become a good pokemon trainer and wishes him the best of luck on his journey.
Red ventures off into the Viridian Forest, releases his two Pokemon, and starts his pokemon journey. In the forest we find, Blue, the trainer he had encountered before, looking for a special pokemon. After he finds a venomoth, thinking that-that is what he is searcjing for, and defeats it, he waits in patience for his chance to appear with his loyal Charmander at his side. We go back to Red, who is looking for an escaped caterpie. He hears rumbling i the bushes and sends Poliwhirl after it. When he comed around looking for Poliwhirl, he sees it lying on the ground burnt badly. Blue just sits there snickering ans says, "We thought it was a wild pokemon when we attacked. Don't take it personally." Red, in anger, launches at Blue, but Blue catches his punch, and explains that since their both here to catch pokemon, they were bound to cross paths at some point of time. Red recognises Blue as the boy that he had met before. He goes to ask Blue a question, but suddenly they hear loud noises as the forest begins to shake. A kangaskan appears from the bushess. Red screams frightened as Blue exclaims that it has finally arrived and sends Charmander to attack. He takes out his pokedex to get more data on the pokemon and Red notices that he has one too. Blue laughs and tells Red, that's he's Professor Oak's grandson. Bluen then orders Charmander to keep attacking. After he's confident that he's done enough damage, Blue, throws a pokeball. But the Kangaskan knocks it back. Angrily, Blue throws another one, only to have it blocked once again. The Kangaskan isn't fighting back, and Red notices that it's trying to protect something in its pouch. He realizes what it is, and tries to get Blue to stop. He won't and keeps on attacking. Red then sends out his Poliwhirl, pushes Blue out of the way, blasts Charmander with a watergun, and rushes over to see if the Kangaskan's baby is hurt. Blue realizes that the Kangaskan was trying to protect its baby as well, and sits there speechless. Red sees that the baby was poisend by a poison pokemon and heals it with an antedote. The Kangaskan nods thankfully and walks away. Blue, still angry says, "If you hadn't butted in, I could have capture it..." But Red retorts, "Come on. You know it isn't really winning. If your opponent is at a disadvantage. Blue snorts, and walks away. Red runs behind Blue, annoyingly, pestering Blue to tell him what his name is. Blue snaps, "If it will shut you up...My name's Blue!! Now leave me alone!!!" Red stops and grins. He then yells from behind him, "Hey, Blue! I'm not losing to you!! Y'hear me, Blue?! I'm gonna win!" Red stands there as Blue walks away. Professor Oak, who isn't far behine sncikers to himself, "Ha ha ha...My grandson and my new discovery...The path to becoming the greatest pokemon trainer suddenly grows steeper." The story ends showing the two boys going their seperate ways.
