View Full Version : Are new video games better than the old ones?

When I play some old games I used to play as a kid, I pretty much enjoy them.
I enjoy them more than any new games I could get.
Since they are new, there are actually more possibilites for the games, better graphics, etc.
Do we need all this stuff?
The video and computer games these days seem all like the same to me.
When I think of the old games, they just seemed more creative.
They certainly weren't a masterpiece of graphics, but they were simply fun to play.
I also noticed that there don't seem to be too many games without 3D effects anymore.
It doesn't necessarily make the new games better or does it?
For example King's Quest7 had 2D graphics which looked rather nice.
King's Quest 8 is 3D and the 3D graphics seriously suck.
Am I the only one who thinks the games have been much better back then?

Interesting...
I don't think it's necessary for a game to have good graphics to be good.
I like strategic/logical games like Pokemon, which don't need amazing graphics to be very interesting.

I think Computer games are going down-hill, in the beginning it used to be about Gameplay and there weren't many games better than Sonic, Mario and Pokemon back on the SNES, Mega-drive and Gameboy.
Now I feel it's all about graphics, Mario 64 is probably the only decent 3D mario and as for Sonic, well, let's just say Sega should be packing it in right about now. Thankgod Pokemon has stuck to the classic 2D Gameboy games.
By the time we actually get to the PS3 games will have become so realistic that going down to the shops will actually be funner, most of PS2's games were all about graphics and let's be frank....PS3 is basically PS2 with a load of added rubbish throw in which will improve only the graphics.

I think that games are worried too much about graphics. The old sonic games, for megadrive, might have lousy scenaries (well, compared with today's ones :P), but it was funny and challenging.
So, I can't decide really =/

Not really.
Some of the older games may have a bad battle system, or something like that, but they have qualities that people can remember.(ie Earthbound)
The newer games have a lot of good graphics, but they lack something.

In general, I think yes. Games are now longer, deeper and often less glitchy.
I still love the old Sonic and Mario games though.

Yes, they are.
Surely the bad games of today can't compare with the bad games of then.
I would say more, but it sounds too cheesy.

Games don't need better graphics to be fun. The Gameplay is what makes them fun, imo. :0
Good thing about most old games, is that you can play them over, over and again. And they won't get that boring. A lot of games now a days seem boring once you beat them.
Btw, I'm not talking about games that were designed for multiplayer.
Like Core Unit said, they don't need super cool graphics, special efects, sounds etc. The only thing which counts is the gameplay.
(Thats why Nintendo Wii don't has the same graphic engine like XBOX 360 or PS3.)

In general, Yes
Like what Moonlight said
The way I see it is that people like older games than newer one is because they usually played them more than the new ones and they are more familiar with it.
Thats the way I see it.
Id say no.
I dont like any of the new consoles either.
SNES > Wii
Sega Megadrive > PS3
And Old games like Super Mario Kart and Super Mario 3 > New Games

Bad topic. It depends on the games.

In some cases Yes, I pretty much enjoy playing both.

It's not when a game was made, but how well it's made, I think.
You had bad games then, like you do now. Then, there's good games back then, and there are now.
Overall? Meh, I don't see a difference. o.o;
