Are there "Pokémon events" in other countries?

well, in germany, there are many events where you can get seldom Pokémon and win prizes. many people meet there. unfortunately I don't live in germany, so I've never been at one, but that isn't my question...
I want to know if there are similar things in other countries.
have you head such a thing in your country?
please tell me!

Well, they sometimes appear in the USA, but it's such a big country that a chance of actually being near enough is pretty small ;(

I remember there was one here but you can't call that an "event".
There was an electric market where you could get Mew for one day and that was it. No battling, no meeting of other trainers, only getting Mew...

I want to the Pokemon Event in San Francisco, it was pretty fun atleast there were trainers there XD..
