Pokemon animation director Masaaki Iwane (岩*雅明) replied on his site discussion board, that the Pokemon anime was originally supposed to run for only 18 months (1½ years). This was said to be revealed while answering a question on why Ash (Satoshi) Ketchum appears to never age.
