This is Broken Wings. It's a story of survival and hardship. If you are after a happy story about a trainer on a journey across Kanto, Johto, or Hoenn this is not the story for you. It is rated PG-13 for scary moments, detailed violence and gore, and some cursing.

Prologue:

"Mom are we going to die?" A young girl asked the woman beside her. There was a terrible sound outside and the girl was clinging tightly to a small red lizard in her arms.

The woman, her mother, was holding tightly to the arms of her seat. "N-no of course not sweetie." But it was far from how she felt. The two were on a plane that was plummeting towards Earth. It had been a normal flight to Kanto to visit the girl's aunt in Pallet. Half way through the trip the plane had entered a swarm of black cloud. There had been a horrible crash and the plane had shaken violently then stalled and begun to fall.

Passengers were screaming and crying in terror as the ground drew closer and closer. In the seat next to the girl's mother was a boy of about sixteen. His face was pale and his eyes were wide. He looked exactly like the young girl felt. He looked over at her and she read his thoughts in his eyes. The girl who had spoken was about thirteen years in age but at the moment she looked seven. Her legs were pulled up to her chest and her deep blue eyes were wide and fearful just like the boy's. The Charmander in her lap was making noises of distress and clung tightly to his trainer.

"All passengers please stay calm!" Came the voice of a flight attendant. The speakers no longer worked so she was shouting to make herself heard. "Please be prepares to head to the emergency exit when we land!"

"Mom." Said the young girl again.

"Yes sweetie?"

"I don't want to...." But she never got to finish her sentence. At that moment there was a scream from one of the passengers and she looked out the window she was sitting next to. A quick glimpse of the ground they would hit seconds later then.....people were screaming. An ear splitting crash. The sound of metal being ripped apart. A sharp pain. And the small girl knew no more.

O_O Wow. Some one called my fic perfect. That's never happened before. ^_^ Thanks a lot. Here's the first chapter.

Chapter 1: Who? Where? Why?

Jodi could smell smoke around her. Her right eye hurt terribly and her head was swimming. The sounds around her seemed muffled some how and she couldn't focus on anything. She let out a low moan and tried to open her eyes. Her right eye was impossible to lift and the left one seemed to be glued shut.

"Hey she's alive!" Some one called nearby. Jodi moved her head from side to side but still had no luck in opening her eyes. Her head was still swimming and she was only dimly aware of some one unbuckling her seat belt then hoisting her up. "Can you walk?" Asked the same voice.

In answer Jodi's legs gave out. She held on to her helpers arm to steady herself but her legs were still shaking and refused to hold her weight. "Hey help me out!" Whoever it was called.

"I can't!" Another voice answered. "I'm takin care of this one!"

"Right." The person helped her up and half carried towards what she assumed was the exit. But in her dazed mind one thing remained clear. Something was wrong. Not the plane though. Something else.

"Ch-char-man-der." She gasped. There was no answer except that the person holding her jerked slightly. Then she felt cool air on her face and passed out again.

"Uhh...." Jodi moaned and rolled over. She felt earth beneath her. "Wh-what...." She sat up and winced. Her left eye was unglued so she opened it but her right eye still hurt and seemed to be held shut by something. She touched her face and found a cloth or something over her eye. Her side was hurting a lot too. She looked up. A boy and a girl were sitting by a small fire. The boy, Jodi realized, was the one that had been sitting next to her mother on the plane. The girl wasn't familiar to her however.

She blinked. "Where am I?"

Both the girl and the boy looked up. The boy grinned. "So you're awake. Good. How are you feeling?"

"Terrible." She replied. She leaned forward but something was restricting her movement. She touched her side and felt a bandage under her shirt. She went bright red and looked up.

Before she could say anything the boy interrupted her. "Don't worry about that. Rikka was the one who patched you up." He indicated the girl sitting next to him.

She smiled. "Yep. You were hurt pretty badly. But the wound on your side is nothin to worry bout. I was more worried bout your eye. It wouldn't stop bleedin so I had ta burn the wound shut. It'll sting and hurt for a while longer but it'll heal and you'll be good as new soon." She had a strange accent and Jodi realized that the boy did too. The girl, Rikka, was around fourteen or fifteen and had very tanned skin. Her hair was long and brown with bright green highlights. Her eyes were also green and she was wearing faded jeans, orange shoes, an orange shirt, and a red and orange jacket.

The boy, who's name she didn't know yet, had short black hair and brown eyes. His skin was tanned but not as much as the girls. He wore a black tank top, white pants, and white and black shoes. Both, like herself, had trainer belts with Pokeballs on them.

When she noticed this she jumped. "Where's Charmander? Did he get out ok?"

"Dun worry he's fine." Rikka replied. She pointed to a spot right behind Jodi. She looked round and saw Charmander snoozing peacefully. His tail was bandaged and she guessed he must have been injured in the crash as well. She scooped her friend up and hugged him tight.

"I was worried you'd been killed in the crash." This statement brought other questions to her mind. "The crash, who got out? Where are we? And does anyone know why we crashed?"

The boy and Rikka exchanged looks. "Not many people did." The boy replied softly. Her pointed to somewhere over Jodi's shoulder. She turned and saw a small group of people scattered around other fires. Her working eye scanned them, but she didn't see who she was looking for. When she had been in the plane she had heard some one say, "I can't I'm takin care of this one." She had assumed this meant her mother. But now that she was out of the plane she could tell that her mother had not been one of the survivors.

"I'm sorry." Said Rikka standing up and walking over to her. She placed a hand on her shoulder. "We're not really sure where we are." She said continuing with answering Jodi's questions. "As for why we crashed, well it seems the plane was hit by lightning. All electrical power failed and the engines died."

Jodi nodded glumly. She stared at her hands and noticed that the glove on her left hand was torn slightly. She looked at the rest of her clothes to see what condition they were in. Her jeans were alright, her forest green and yellow shoes were in good shape, her yellow and forest green fingerless gloves were fine except for the small rip, and her forest green shirt was fine. That was strange since she had a wound on her side. She guessed her shirt must have slipped before whatever had cut her had cut her. The hat she always wore over her dirty-blonder hair was beside Charmander whom she had put down to sleep some more. It's was also forest green and had three wavy yellow lines in a row on it. That pattern was also on the shoulder of her t-shirt. It was obvious that it had been cleaned other wise there'd be blood all over it. She noticed that her hair was no longer pulled up but the hair tie she used was sitting on her cap. Beside her cap was her forest green jacket with the yellow stripes on the shoulder and back and a forest green and yellow Pokegear. But she could already tell the Pokegear was broken.

"When we were on the plane, I heard some one say they couldn't help because they were helping some one else. I was sure that they meant my mom."

"That was me. But I wasn't helpin her because, never mind. Anyway I was helpin a lil girl. She's sleepin right now. I'll introduce ya to her when she wakes."

So that was it. Jodi looked at the group of survivors around them. Twenty-five including herself. There had been two hundred and two passengers on that plane. One hundred and seventy-seven people had died today. Her mother had been one of them. Now she, along with everyone else, was stuck in this place. Why had this happened? Where were they? And of the few who survived, how many would live to see them rescued? All these questions spun through Jodi's mind along with several others. She voiced none of them however. All these questions would be answered in time. There was just one she had to ask. "Where did the bandages come from?"

"Well there were some emergency kits on board and some one had sense enough to grab em before leavin the plane. They did us a favor. I dunno who it was though and they're either to modest or shy to say it was them."

Jodi nodded. "Well that's good." She said quietly.

Obviously attempting to get Jodi's mind off the crash Rikka asked, "So what's your name and where are ya form?"

"I'm Jodi and I'm from NewBark Town in Johto." She replied.

"I thought you had a Johto accent. That'd also explain the Pokegear. Me, I'm from Sunburst Island." Rikka said cheerfully.

"So you're from the Orange Islands. I should have guessed. The accent and tan explains everything." Said the boy grinning. "I'm Julian and I'm from Hoenn. My mother is Flannery the Gym Leader."

"That's cool. So you must be a fire type trainer right?" Asked Jodi curiously.

"Yes I am. But I intend to train other Pokemon too. Maybe when I get older I can take over the gym." Replied Julian tossing a Pokeball into the air then catching it.

There wasn't much more to say at the moment. All three of them were now thinking their own thoughts. Jodi laid down next to her Charmander and shut her eyes. The last thought about before she fell asleep was that some one must notice that the plane hadn't come in and come searching for them. Perhaps some one would find them soon, maybe even tomorrow. This thought was comforting and it helped her relax until she finally fell asleep.

Thanks. :D For the complement I'll post the next chapter. I am currently writing chapter four so that should be done soon. When I write I think of my characters as more or less real. It helps portray emotions better and makes the story more fun to write. Other wise it feels like work.

Chapter 2: The Beginning of Recovery

"Mom? Mom! Mom where are you?" Jodi stood alone in the middle of an unknown forest. The cold bit at her face and arms. She pulled her jacket tighter around her and began walking. The silence was so intense it felt like she was being suffocated. "MOMMY!" She cried again. Tears slipped down her face and froze before they reached the end of her nose. Her breath rose in a cloud every time she spoke. Her body was frozen and a soft snow was falling.

Eventually the cold became too much. She collapsed on the snow covered ground and cried silently. She didn't know where she was or what had happened to cause her to be there. Her heat punded with fear and her whole body shook with cold and emotion. Something deep inside her was missing. She felt a great pain in her heart that she couldn't explain.

"Ihy wo-won't s-stop." She muttered through chattering teeth. With the last of her strength, Jodi pushed herself up and trudged on. Soon her legs became numb from the cold but she kept moving. Her only chance was not stopping. Every now and then she would call out for her missing mother but she never received an answer.

Then, without warning, something appeared through the snow that had begun to fall. Just a shadow at first but soon Jodi could tell it was a person. Some one she knew and loved very much. "Mom!" At that moment she forgot that she was frozen right down to the bone and that walking had become very difficult. At last she had found who she was looking for. Warmth seemed to surge through her body as she ran through the snow towards her mother.

It seemed to take forever to reach her. But after ten minutes she could see her mother clearly. The kind woman put out her arms for her daughter. Jodi darted forward and embraced her mother in a bear hug. But after a moment her arms slipped through thin air. She looked up to see her mother just in front of her with a sad look upon her face. A second later flames erupted around her. Jodi screamed and fell backwards. Her mother's expression never changed as the flames enveloped her body. "Jodi." She said softly, then vanished. Jodi was left alone with tears streaming down her face and her heart aching much worse than before.

The sun shone warmly against Jodi's skin. It was early morning and the survivors of the horrible crash the day before were all finally asleep. The fires that had burned the night before were only ash and charred but no one seemed to notice. It wasn't of very much importance at the moment anyway. The fires could easily be restarted and there was plenty of wood around.

"Mother." A soft whisper was the only sound that could be heard at the moment. Jodi turned over and pulled her legs up to her chest. She relaxed and rolled over again. This time her wounded eye bumped against a rock. She yelped and sat up her good eye watering from two kinds of pain. Jodi quickly brushed a hand across her face then turned to look around her. The camp seemed to be peaceful at the moment. No one stirred except for the small orange lizard that was lying next to her.

"Char?" The little flame Pokemon asked softly.

"I'm alright." Jodi replied in an equally soft voice. "Just, just a bad dream. That's all."

"Char....." Jodi brushed her hand across her eyes again and hugged her companion tightly.

"At least I still have you." Charmander nodded. He knew what she meant. Though Jodi had been daddy's girl she had still loved her mother with all her heart. And it was at this time that Jodi would have needed her the most. Her father was still in Johto. Charmander wondered if he had heard that the plane hadn't come in yet. This thought was obviously on Jodi's mind too. She wasn't crying any more though her eyes were shining.

"Hey Jodi are ya feelin alright?" A familiar voice spoke behind Jodi. She turned and smiled at Rikka.

"Yeah I'm alright." Jodi replied, standing up.

"K then. Well I think some breakfast would make us all feel better. We have a little food so I think we might as well use it." Rikka stood up as well and nodded to Charmander. The fire lizard relit the fire then moved closer to warm himself. Jodi followed suit.

"What about everyone else? We can't use all the food."

"Of course not. We all have a small store of food. If it runs out, well, we worry about that later. For now stop worryin. I can tell you've got a lot of things on your mind but try not to think about anything bad at the moment. I'm sure they'll send a rescue plane soon enough. Then we can have a buffet back at home."

"Well I hope it's soon. I'm getting really hungry." Julian sat down next to the fire and began warming his hands. The whole camp was stirring now. Some, like Rikka, were beginning to make breakfast. Other were just starting fires or sitting and staring into space. Charmander wandered off to help with fire starting then came back and curled up in Jodi's lap.

Ten minutes later the food was ready. It wasn't much. Half an egg each and a biscuit. But no one complained. They ate slowly, savoring the food because they didn't know when they would taste it again. Despite what Rikka said, there was no guarantee they'd be rescued any time soon.

"Rikka?" A small voice spoke curiously from behind the tanned girl.

Rikka turned and smiled at some one Jodi couldn't see. "Hey Mimi." Rikka lifted a small girl off the ground and set her in her lap. She gave her the left over egg that was being kept warm over the fire. "This is Miami. She's the one I was helpin yesterday."

Jodi looked at the little girl. She couldn't be any more than five and she had a bandage on her left arm. She had shoulder length dark brown hair and innocent bright blue eyes. Her clothes were a little singed but apart from that alright. A purple t-shirt with a Pichu on the front and jeans along with purple and white shoes made up her outfit. A gold locket heart-shaped hung around her neck. Jodi was amazed it hadn't been lost or broken in the crash. "Hello Miami." She said after a minute. "I'm Jodi."

"Hello Jodi." Said Miami sweetly. "I'm Miami but mommy always calls me Mimi."

Jodi thought about asking Mimi where her mother was but thought better of it. She feared the answer would be the same one she would give. Back on the plane. "So do you like Pichu?" It was all she could think to say.

"Yeah. I'm going to get one some day. Then it'll evolve into a Pikachu." Mimi smiled then looked down at her food. Unlike the others she ate quickly. Soon she was asleep in Rikka's lap.

"Sweet kid. But I dunno how she's going to survive out here." Julian spoke with worry a touch of sadness in his voice.

"She's tough." Replied Rikka simply.

"That much is obvious. She survived the crash didn't she?" He smiled. "I think we should get some more rest now. Maybe each person should stay up for an hour and, and keep watch. Incase a plane comes." The others nodded.

"I'll go first." Rikka volunteered cheerfully. "Here Jodi, you tuck little Mimi in." She smiled and gently picked up the small child. Jodi took her jacket and placed it over Mimi's small form. Then she laid down close by. Charmander curled up with her.

"I wonder if....if things will ever go back to normal." It was a random question but it had been nagging at her. Her heart ached so much it seemed like a physical pain. But she wouldn't let her hold it back. She refused to let herself think about her mother. She could do that after they were rescued. Right now she needed to rest and save her energy. It was late summer but their location was still chilly. A mountain seemed to be the logical explanation. Was this good or bad. In a way good. They might be easier to spot from a high altitude. But also it made it worse. Mountains were always cold and it would be bound to get colder. If only they had landed on some warm island.

"Char charmander char." Charmander snuggled closer. His warm body eased Jodi's worrying. Rikka was right. She shouldn't worry so much. They'd be rescued soon enough. She could worry all she liked when she was back home. Slowly the tension left her body as sleep began to take her. But she had already begun to recover from the shock and horror the crash had brought. She was alive and she had friends with her. Charmander was still by her side and she knew he would always be. There was food enough to last for a few days if they ate sparingly and as long as they conserved their energy their chances of survival were good. Jodi and Charmander slipped once again into dreams. But this time, Jodi dreamed of home rather than of her mother. The pain in her heart lessoned and the first stage of recovery was over.

Ok my computer crashed but I have two more chapters written. I hope th my computers back up before I post the next one. As you might have guessed there's going to be a larger space between chapters than usual and I'm sorry. ^^"' But for now, enjoy chapter three.Chapter 3: Insanity

Five days passed without any sign of a plane. The food supplies were gone and the survivors of the plane crash had to be content with melting snow for water and resting most of the time. On the seventh day people began to nibble on leaves and twigs. Jodi and her friends were starving and were doing the same thing. They had to be careful though. Jodi knew that some plants contained a deadly poison that would kill you in minutes. Two more days passed and all hope of rescue seemed to have been lost.

"I'm hungry." Mimi sniffed and looked at the leaf she was holding. "I want mommy. Mommy can make us food." Her words were beginning to sound more babyish and she was constantly asking for her mother. A few times she had tried to go back to the crash site but the others wouldn't allow her to get far.

"I'm sorry Mimi but there isn't any food." Rikka held the young girl and rocked her back and forth. "It's time for your nap any way." She began to hum softly.

"I.....don't.....wann...." Lack of food had taken all the strength out of the small child and it was taking it's toll on the rest of them too.

"She won't last without food. Leaves can only do so much." Jodi's voice was hollow and sad. The weather was cold and they stayed close to the fire most of the time. Jodi had put on her hat and, jacket, and even her Pokegear. Anythign that could provide warmth. She has tied her hair up so it wouldn't turn into a knotted mess. She wasn't sure why she cared. A small part of her still believed they'd be rescued and she didn't want to look like she'd been sleeping on the cold ground for a week when they were found.

"Dun worry Jodi. We'll find something to eat." Rikka no longer had her happy carefree attitude. She had stopped saying they'd be rescued soon because it didn't seem like they ever would.

"I CAN'T TAKE IT!" The shout echoed around the clearing causing everyone to stir. A man was standing up and looking around the clearing. His eyes looked crazy and he was breathing heavily. "I'm starving and there's no food! So I'm going to make some food!" Everyone stared at him. Some people seemed scared at this outburst. The man reached into his Pocket and drew out a Pokeball. He tossed it into the air and a Growlith appeared.

"Geerr owlith!" Said the Pokemon happily. It rubbed against the man's legs and smiled at him.

"I should have done this before." Hunger had driven the man insane. Jodi's eyes widened. Rikka seemed to understand too. She grabbed Mimi as the man pulled out a pocket knife. His eyes were wide and his face was twisted.

Jodi's heart pounded with horror and Rikka covered Mimi's eyes. Julian stood up to protest but it was too late. "Groooooowwwwwwww!" A pained cry and Growlith was dead. The man tossed the body onto his fire and took his knife to it. He had betrayed his friend and companion and now he was devouring it's body. The people around him moved away. But Jodi noticed a few of them had the same crazy look beginning to creep into their eyes. She snatched Charmander and held him tight. She couldn't tare her eyes away from the horrible sight in front of her. She didn't even notice she was crying.

"The heartless *******." Julian breathed. He dropped down and turned away. Jodi and Rikka followed suit. Rikka still had her hand over Mimi's eyes and the pore child was crying again. It was not the last seen of humans betraying companions. That same day two more people got crazy looks in their eyes but they didn't have Pokemon so they went over to the mans fire and tried to take some of the meat from him.

"Get away!" He shouted. Insanity seemed to have taken him. He growled at one of the people and brandished his knife at them.

"Shh shh. It's alright." Mimi buried her face in Rikka's chest and had her hands over her ears. Jodi held Charmander so tight she wasn't sure if he could breath. Both of them had turned away. Julian had curled his hands into fists and was staring towards the trees with a pained expression on his face.

Suddenly Jodi felt some one grab her from behind. She yelped and spun around. One of the people that had been trying to take some of the meat from the man was staring at her. Her eyes too were crazy and she was breathing heavily. "Hand it over." She hissed.

"Hand what over." Her arms tightened around Charmander. She could hear Julian and Rikka stirring behind her.

"The Pokemon. Hand it over." Jodi noticed the cut on the woman's face from where the knife the crazy man had been swinging around must have cut her.

"N-no." Jodi said shakily. She moved so that it would be easier to get up and run if she had to.

The woman slammed her fist into Jodi's face and spat. "Hand it over!"

"No!" Jodi shouted back. Her voice was no longer shaking and her eyes burned with anger.

"Give it to me!" The lady lunged and Jodi rolled onto her back and planted her feet in the woman's stomach. She stumbled backwards gasping but lunged again.

"Flamethrower!" Charmander shot a jet of hot flames at the woman and she fell back again. Jodi rolled over again and jumped up. "You'll never take Charmander!" She shouted angrily. "I won't let you!" Two more people were moving towards her. Some of them examined the woman with a terrifying curiosity.

"Food." Said one. Jodi felt her stomach lurch. One of the people had grabbed the woman and was choking her.

"S-stop it!" She cried desperately and backing up another few feet. As a Pokemon trainer she was used to going a few days on no food. It seemed that the same was true for Rikka and Julian and the only reason Mimi hadn't gone crazy too was because she was so young. Now however her skills didn't matter. Only trainers had them and most of these people weren't trainers. At least not trainers that take on gyms. They may have Pokemon but they were pets.

Jodi backed up another step as the woman went limp. She bumped into some one and turned. It was a Combusken. She nodded to it. Rikka had also released a Pokemon. A spunky Aipom that was darker in color than a normal Aipom. "Let's get out of here." Julian said in disgust.

"I agree." Jodi said angrily.

"Come on." Rikka held Mimi tight and turned away. The three friends and their Pokemon left the clearing without any intentions of coming back.

Chapter 4: A Berry Good Situation

Jodi, Rikka, Julian, and Mimi traveled for five hours through the unknown woods. By the time night came they wouldn't have been able to the camp even if they'd wanted to. They stopped in a small clearing and built up a warm fire then began to search for anything to eat.

“I hungwey.” Mimi sniffed as Rikka set her down.

“I know sweetie. But ya have ta hang on a little longer.” Rikka looked exhausted. They all did. The cold was beginning to affect them all but they had to leave the sanctuary of the fire the find food.

“Why don’t we take turns searching?” Jodi suggested wearily. “There’s no point in all of us going out at once. And besides, some one has to stay here and watch Mimi.”

Julian nodded silently. “I agree. I’ll go first and you three rest.” No one objected. Julian left the camp with his Combusken by his side. The air became colder as the night settled in. But there wasn’t much choice. Eventually he ran across an old Pidgey nest. But only bits of egg shell remained. The nest had been raided by some Pokemon a while ago.

Eventually Julian came accross a small berry bush. There were at least ten berries. To some one who had been living on leaves for four days this was heaven. He grabbed every berry he could find including the ones that had fallen to the ground. Then he headed back to camp.

"Did you find anything?" Asked Jodi hopefully. She had gotten up when she saw Julian returning and was now grinning because of the satisfied look on his face.

"Sure did. Twelve Oren berries!"

"Awesome!" Rikka jumped up and dashed over. She looked at the berries Julian was holding and emitted a small squeal of delight. Mimi made a similar noise when Julian put the berries down near the fire.

"Beerrwies!" She looked at Rikka who nodded then grabbed one and took a bite out of it. Julian split the pile into four smaller piles then began to eat as well. Julian, Rikka, and Jodi shared their berries with their Pokemon.

"I woner if er are nymo borrwies awoun here." Jodi grinned and swollowed her mouth full of berry. "Sorry. I wonder if there are anymore berries around here."

"I wouldn't be surprised." Replied Rikka simply. The four finished their berries quickly then sat around and talked for a little while. They all felt content and full for the first time in what seemed like forever. Soon the conversation died down and they just sat in silence for a while.

"So who's going berry hunting next?"

"I will." Jodi pictured a huge bush with more berries than any of them could carry. Julian must have been thinking the same thing. He grinned but said nothing more.

"I'll go after you then." Rikka said after a minute or to. "I hope there are some Mago Berries around here. Those things are the best."

"I've never had any. Pecha Berries are my favorites." Charmander, who had been resting peacefully, suddenly sprang to life and nodded frantically.

"Char charmander char!"

All four laughed. "Charmander loves Pecha berries too. It's good and bad because we can both agree on which berry to eat, but we fight over them a lot too."

"Well I like all berries, mostly. But the top has got to be the Magost berry. Combusken prefers the Watmel berry." Julian grinned over at his sleeping Pokemon. "So what does Aipom like Rikka?"

"Belue berries." She replied simply. "Though why I have no idea. They are terribly sour. What about you Mimi?"

The little girl thought for a while. Finally she smiled and said, "Chesto Berrwies!"

Jodi smiled. "I'm feeling pretty warm towards them too." Again the group fell into silence. Eventually the sun began to set and the fire died down. Jodi got up and got some more wood for the fire then laid down and closed her eyes. Charmander snuggled up next to her. The others son drifted off to sleep but Jodi stayed awake. Something was bothering her. She was full. She was moderatly happy. She was warm. So what was it? She didn't know. But she had the feeling that something bad was going to happen, and soon.

Chapter 5: Attacked

Jodi wasn't sure when she fell asleep. She wasn't even sure she did fall asleep. But she did know that she was suddenly awake and staring into the darkness. A soft breeze blew through the trees. Something was wrong. "Julian, Rikka, Mimi, wake up."

"What is it?" Mumbled Rikka sleepily.

"I don't know. Something's out there." Jodi hissed quietly.

"What?"

"Something's out there." Jodi said again. "Wake Julian and Mimi."

Rikka was still half asleep but she got up anyways. Yawning widely she crawled over to Mimi and shook her gently. "Wake up." She said softly.

"No wanna get up." Mimi muttered rolling over.

"Ya have to Mimi. Come on." Rikka picked up the small girl and rocked her gently until she woke. She put her down and let her eyes adjust to the darkness.

"What's the fuss?" Julian asked in a slightly annoyed tone.

"Jodi says there's somethin out there." Rikka replied looking at her friend.

"Like what?" Asked Julian, reaching for the Pokeball at his waste.

"I don't know." Jodi snapped back. "But it's not friendly."

"And how do you know it's out there? I can't see or hear anything."

"Suicune's Intuition." She said simply.

"What?" Rikka sounded completely clueless.

"I'll tell you later. Hey Charmander do you think you could give us some extra light?"

"Char charmander char." The flame on Charmander's tail grew steadily larger and illuminated the area around them. The trees was were dark and silent. Not a sound disturbed the night except for the soft rustle of wind. The flickering light from Charmander's tail flame caste eerie shadows across the ground. None of them moved.

"Jodi I dun think there's anythin out there." Rikka turned her shadowed face towards her. It was obvious she was thinking it was just a dream or that feeling you get sometimes when you're alone in the dark.

"There is." Said Jodi in a low voice. "Listen. You can hear it."

"Jodi all I hear is the wind."

Jodi nodded but didn't reply. A minute passed. Then two. Still nothing. Julian turned to Jodi and opened his mouth to speak but Jodi shushed him with a wave of her hand. Mimi yawned and leaned against Rikka for support.

"Jodi..."

"Shhh."

Julian scowled. "Listen there's nothing out there. If there was we would have seen it by now."

"Shush." Said Jodi again. She gave him an annoyed and slightly nervous look.

"What makes you so sure there's something out there?"

"I told you. Suicune's Intuition."

"And what is 'Suicune's Intuition'?"

"I'll tell you later." Her voice was becoming edgy and the instance more audible.

"Jodi, I think Julian's right. If there really was somethin out there we would know by now."

"No Rikka, listen. You come from the Orange Islands so you wouldn't be able to hear it. It's a rare gift anyway. Now please shut u..." At that moment there was a low growl from somewhere to the left. All four of them turned to gaze into the darkness. The growl came again.

Charmander moved his tail to shine in the direction it had come. But the creature, what ever it was, was standing too far away to be seen.

"Wha is it Rikka?"

"Hush Mimi. I dunno what it is." Rikka's hand grasped the Pokeball at her waste. She and Julian were both prepared to act if needed.

"We should relight the fire."

"Are you sure that's a good idea, Julian? I'd rather not turn my back on this thing."

"Well you've got a better idea..." The growl came gain, but louder this time. Low thuds echoed around the clearing. The creature was getting closer.

"W, w, Wikka..." Mimi's small voice was scared and her words were beginning to sound more childish again. "W, Wikka I wanta go home." She began to cry. "I no wike it here nymore. I wanta go home!"

"I do to Mimi. But we can't. Just be strong sweetie. We'll be alright." Rikka picked up the crying child and held her close. "I won't let ya get hurt."

All of them looked at her. They all felt the same way. None of them would let Mimi, or anyone else, get hurt.

"CHAAAAAAAR!"

"Charmander!" Jodi whirled around. She had done exactly what she said she wouldn't do. Turn her back on whatever was approaching. The light from Charmander's tail wasn't visible. "Charmander! Hey Charmander where are you!" There was only silence. Jodi felt tears slide down her face. "No Chamander. I can't lose you too..."

"Chaaaaar....." A weak cry emanated from somewhere far off.

"Charmander! Charmander hang on!" Jodi started off in the direction of her friend's cries.

"No you can't!" Julian had grabbed her arm to stop her.

"Let me go! I have to help Charmander!"

"You can't go out there. You have no light and no idea what that thing was. What if there are more of them? What if that one's still here?"

"I don't care! I have to help Charmander! I lost my mom but I won't lose Charmander!" She turned and punched Julian as hard as she could with her free hand. "I couldn't help my mom when that plane crashed. But I can help Charmander. Maybe you wouldn't care enough to go after your Combusken but I care more than enough to go after Charmander!" She spun around and vanished from sight.

Julian watched her go. Rikka was still holding Mimi. Her face was quite expressionless but it was clear that she was thinking hard. She looked over at Julian and saw he was thinking hard too. She waited. Finally Julian made an angry noise and turned away. He walked over to the remains of the fire and began to put more wood on it.

"Are...aren't ya goin ta go after her?"

"Why would I? We don't know what it is that took her Charmander. There's no guarantee it won't get us too." He released his Combusken and had the fire relit.

Rikka remained silent for a moment. She had a sad look in her eyes. "I really thought ya were a good person Julian. I thought ya carred more than this." She set Mimi down and straightened up. "I don't care if there's some monster out there waitin for meh, I'm goin to help Jodi." She patted Mimi on the head and turned to go.

"Don go Wikka! Pwease don go!"

"I have ta Mimi. Don't worry sweetie. I'll be back soon." She bent to give her a quick hug, glared at Julian, then hurried off and vanished from sight.

Julian stared in the direction she had gone but didn't move. Slowly he turned back to the fire and gazed wordlessly into the flames.
